Meeting the Barden Team...Heather Gordon

Heather Gordon is a Senior Associate with our team in Dublin. She leads on the recruitment of accounting professionals in the practice and consulting space. Heather also supports the recently qualified accounting market for those seeking industry accounting roles.

Prior to joining us team Heather worked in the Human Capital Consulting team in Deloitte, where she gained first-hand experience in a wide range of areas such as organisation design, people analytics and project management. Her background in a Big 4 consulting firm provides her with a unique insight into opportunities in this area.

We recently caught up with Heather to find out a bit more about her.

Where are you from?

Originally from Tipperary, but luckily I didn’t pick up the accent!

Where did you study?

I studied Economics, Politics & Law in DCU.

How old were you when you had your first paying job? And what was it?

I was 13 – riding out race horses for Charlie Swan at 6am on Saturday mornings. I wasn’t that strong so they used to run away with me & tear around the race course; definitely developed my love of speed & adrenaline in this job!

Where did you work before joining Barden?

After college, I worked in the equestrian industry for about 2 years – buying & selling sport horses and also doing 3-day eventing. After that, I spent another year back in DCU as a full-time Economics Tutor. I then joined the Human Capital Consulting team in Deloitte.

Is there an achievement or contribution that you are most proud of?

Not dying during the Atacama Crossing 2017 and, by some incredible miracle, actually making it across the finish line!

(For context: After running two 10km races, I decided the next logical step was to enter a 250km self-supported desert race. I trained myself for this race and hadn’t a notion what I was doing or the magnitude of the challenge!).

Why did you choose to work with Barden?

I happened to meet some of the Barden team as part of a project I was working on with Deloitte at the time. I was impressed by their professionalism & expertise and thought that their values aligned with my own. For me, it was less about wanting to work in recruitment per say, and more about just wanting to work in Barden.

What’s the best thing about working here?

The general day-to-day craic – I’ve been here for over 2.5 years and have yet to experience Sunday night fear! Barden parties also tend to be fairly wild!…..

What does your role in Barden involve?

I work as part of the Recently Qualified team here in Barden, specialising in the 0-3 years PQE part of the market. Our clients range from Irish PLCs, to large multinationals, to SMEs. My role involves meeting with people who are considering the next step in their career, helping them to map out their potential options and what businesses they are best suited to in terms of experience, culture and their own personal career ambitions.

What three words best describe you?

Born to Run

Who is your role model, and why?

My Dad – he’s engrained his sense of adventure and love of travel in me from an early age, as well as teaching me the value of hard work (summers spent stacking turf on the bog… anyone else familiar with this torture!?). He’s also incredibly supportive of both my professional career and commitment to ultrarunning, as well as being on hand for very sound advice. He’s currently travelling around Europe in a camper van with my Mam #RetirementGoals

Have you a favourite saying or quote?

It’s not always sunny on race day (i.e. so don’t make excuses not to train when it’s raining!)

Glass half full or half empty?

Full. Of Glendalough gin usually. Or beetroot juice if I’m racing lol.

What’s your favourite moment of the day?

Early morning on the mountains in peace & quiet, when the rest of the world is still sleeping.

Where in the world would you most like to visit?

Costa Rica, Nepal, New Zealand, Japan… Anywhere there is mountains to run really!
