As one of the team who specialises in financial services careers and recruitment, I wanted to share some key info for anyone considering a career in risk and compliance.

Read on to find out more about the basics when it comes to understanding what risk and compliance is, and why someone would want to move into it…

What is Risk & Compliance?

There has been a huge increase in the emphasis that companies place on risk and compliance, and this emphasis has been growing at a rapid pace since the financial crisis, with the number of job opportunities within the risk and compliance world growing alongside.

Due to the increase in the level of regulatory pressure, companies must ensure that they comply with the relevant risk and compliance frameworks, policies and procedures. They must have ongoing due-diligence and ensure that they are following regulatory requirements to ensure that they are future proofing their business. Failure to do so can result in legal penalties, financial or material loss.

Why move into it?

The business and regulatory environments in which companies are operating is becoming increasingly complex and changing at a rapid rate, which is resulting in lots of new and different opportunities, across all sectors.

As of this morning, as I write this blog, there were over 825 open roles risk and compliance opportunities listed on one of Ireland’s leading job boards!

Becoming a member of a risk or compliance team exposes you to a variety of opportunities which include developing, implementing and monitoring global and local risk compliance policies and procedures.

By moving into risk or compliance you become part of the change management within a company and have the opportunity to develop the ability to negotiate and build relationships with senior members of the company.

In a wide range of risk and compliance jobs you take on an advisory and consulting role, giving you great exposure to the entire organisation itself, as well as external parties, as you advise teams on the potential risks they face.
