Meeting The Barden Team… David Healy

David Healy is an Assistant Accountant with Barden and is part of the Support Team based in Dublin. He has over 20 years’ experience in accounts and payroll and joined Barden in November 2022.

We recently caught up with David to learn a little bit more about him…

Where are you from?

I am from a small town in south Kildare called Castledermot.

Where did you study?

I did my primary degree in St Patrick’s College Drumcondra. I then completed a H Dip in Business with UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School in Blackrock. Later in 2003 I then decided to undertake and complete a degree in HR Management with the National College of Ireland.

What did you enjoy most about your time studying?

In relation to academia, I found my strengths laid in socialising and I would go as far to say I excelled in that facet of third level education! Meeting new people is something I have always really enjoyed and I made friends for life in college. That was the most satisfying outcome I achieved from my time in college.

How old were you when you had your first paying job? And what was it

I was 15 and I worked in a grain yard driving a loader and drying corn. It was a summer job I had for 7 summers and helped finance the college social life.

Where did you work before joining Barden?

Before joining Barden in 2022 I worked for 22 years in Castlethorn Construction.

What made you decide to move into the world of recruitment?

After 22 years in construction I felt I needed a change and was introduced to Barden by a friend. I was initially a candidate, when a role in the finance department that I could be a fit for opened up.

Why did you choose to work with Barden?

I met 6 people from Barden before I joined and all 6 were so friendly, genuine, honest and were so passionate and content working in Barden that it was a very easy choice to make.

What’s the best thing about working here?

The people are number one for me, then the culture, ideology and values of the company.

What was most surprising to you about Barden?

For me it’s how friendly and open everyone was in the organisation and how freely information is shared among colleagues, which previously was an alien concept to me!

What does your role in Barden involve?

It is a finance role & it is very varied. I am involved in payroll, processing sales, purchase invoices and expenses. There are various monthly processes need for monthly management accounts such as various journals that need to be posted and analysis of information. My role calls for me to communicate and work with all departments in the organisation and that is probably the most enjoyable aspect of my role.

What top tip would you give to those looking to change role?

Do your research and make sure the roles you are considering are in line with the perception you have of the role.

What three words best describe you?

Talkative, good humoured and loyal.

Who is your role model, and why?

My parents due to the personal, professional and financial sacrifices they made to make sure myself and my sister had a happy childhood and afforded us the opportunity to third level education, which unfortunately was a privilege not afforded to all my friends.

Is there an achievement or contribution that you are most proud of?

Trying to be the best Dad to my two girls and instil in them that they should always treat others how they would like to be treated themselves. Although running a close second I also won a Kildare county under 12’s division 4 hurling medal…any sports aficionados will understand the significance of such an achievement😂

Have you a favourite saying or quote? What is it?

The great Bill Shankly quote “Some people think football is a matter of life or death but in fact it is more important than that.”

Glass half full or half empty?

Half Full

What’s your favourite song and book?

Song Oasis Wonderwall. It brings me back to my college days the minute I hear it.

My favourite book is Trevor Brennan’s Heart and Soul, it’s not your stereotypical sports autobiography/biography.

Where in the world would you most like to visit?

I would love visit Argentina the home of in my opinion the 2 best footballers ever Maradona and Messi.

And finally, who would win a fight between Spiderman, Batman or Wonder Woman?

Wonder Woman of course.
