Powering Progress: Women in Tech

Only 23% of women who major in STEM subjects end up in tech roles, compared to 44% of men.

Women comprise just 22% of the tech workforce across Europe, with an even more glaring disparity in specialised areas such as DevOps, where women represent only 8% of the workforce.

The lack of women in tech is also reflected in funding gaps. In 2023, women-founded and co-founded teams received only 10% of all venture capital in Europe. This means that 90% of European VC funding went to start-ups with all-male or solo male founders.

Despite growing efforts to encourage women into STEM fields, the statistics remain stark.

As we enter 2025, we want to shine a spotlight on the women who are making significant strides in the tech sector, despite the challenges they face. These women come from diverse backgrounds and are at different stages of their careers, each contributing to the industry in unique ways across a wide range of technology roles.

Through our Powering Progress: Women in Tech series, we will share their insights, experiences, and advice in the hope that their stories will inspire other young women to pursue their careers in technology. Through their voices, we aim to highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion in the tech industry, and show that, while the journey can be challenging, it is also filled with opportunity.

“The women in our series are proof that, despite the challenges, progress is happening. Their stories remind us that every barrier broken makes the path a little easier for the next generation of women in tech.” Catherine Drysdale | Consultant | Tech | Projects, Transformation & Change | Barden Ireland
