77% don’t tell their employer the real reason for their absences.
32% have stepped back from promotions.
29% have reduced their working hours.
36% considered giving up work entirely… with 8% actually leaving.
The reason behind these stats is not widely discussed in workplaces.
The reason behind these stats is menopause.
Right now, 420,000 peri- and menopausal women are in the workforce. How organisations choose to handle this reality will shape their talent pipeline.
Menopause education and support are critical for retention, growth, and success.
To understand what businesses can do to support women through this time, we caught up with Loretta Dignam, founder of The Menopause Hub Academy.
“Menopause can affect confidence, performance, and even lead women to leave the workforce early. In fact, almost 1 in 10 women have left a job because of menopause symptoms, and over 80% say it negatively impacts their work. Supporting women through menopause isn’t a ‘nice to have’ – it’s essential for retaining talent, promoting equity, and creating truly inclusive workplaces.
The Menopause Hub Academy provides expert-led training for organisations to become menopause-inclusive. We equip leaders, HR, and staff with the knowledge, training tools, and confidence to support colleagues going through menopause, and create a culture where everyone can thrive
Organisations that complete our programme report lower absenteeism, higher employee engagement, and better retention, especially among midlife women. It also boosts confidence in managers and sends a strong message: we care about our people, enhancing employer brand reputation.
In the UK, under the Employment Rights Bill, from 2027, employers with 250+ employees will have to publish a menopause plan. And voluntary from April 2026. While Ireland isn’t there yet, we absolutely see similar legislation coming – and forward-thinking organisations are already getting ahead of the curve.”
Menopause is Temporary. Losing Leaders is Permanent.
