Over 5 years ago, I moved from a well-established recruitment firm and joined Barden, a then start up firm with a mission to do things differently and leaders that I really believed in. Their energy and approach to recruitment inspired me to become absorbed in this mission and over the past few years they encouraged and supported me in taking opportunities to contribute to Barden’s growth, image and culture. I am extremely thankful to them for their belief in me, for trusting me countless times to dive into the unknown in different markets and for allowing me to exercise my creativity. Theirs, and my Barden colleagues, support when it comes to both professional and personal achievements is something that I’ll always be extremely grateful for and why I feel at home here.

In this next step of my journey with Barden, along with my team, I will be continuing our mission to offer more opportunities for our clients and for people in their careers to partner with Barden. Recently, we have been helping more and more of our clients with recruitment for their human resources and business support functions and with this I am delighted to be launching our Business Support Talent Advisory and Recruitment Practice. I will also be continuing to support operational finance professionals too (this is the area I started off recruiting almost 9 years ago and will always be close to my heart!). I am very excited for this next chapter with Barden and grateful to have the support of such a strong team around me as we all work together to make Barden’s services more readily available to people across different specialisms.”

Susan joined the Barden team in May 2023. We sat down with her recently to find out a little bit more about her…

Where are you from?

I’m from Cork City.

Where did you study?

I studied Economics and Politics in University College Cork (UCC).

What did you enjoy most about your time studying?

The studying wasn’t really the highlight for me, it was all about the friendships I made during that time and the great memories. The friends I made in college are still some of my best friends to this day!

How old were you when you had your first paying job? And what was it?

I had my first paying job at 15, I babysat at the weekends and during the summer months.

Where did you work before joining Barden?

I worked in talent acquisition for the Bon Secours Hospital in Cork. My focus was on the recruitment of healthcare professionals, specifically nurses. It was a demanding and fast-paced role, considering there is such a shortage of nurses here in Ireland and a high demand for their skills.

Why did you choose to work with Barden?

I had decided it was time for a change and to make a move from talent acquisition, so I started exploring my opportunities in the wider world of recruitment. I was introduced to Barden by someone that had a really positive experience with them as a candidate. After speaking with Ed, Tara and Jonathon it was clear to me that Barden really did do things differently with a caring people first approach. I knew that was something I wanted to part of.

What’s the best thing about working here?

Both the culture and people. There is always a positive and uplifting vibe around the office and it’s great to be working with such supportive and passionate people.

What does your role in Barden involve?

My role involves working with people who are looking for advice to make the best next step in their career, getting to know them and assisting them to find a role that will be the best fit for them. I work alongside Tara Higgins in the Business Support and Operational Finance Practice. We provide support to people across different areas in Business Support such as human Resources and administration. In the Operational Finance we look after roles such as payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and credit control.

What three words best describe you?

Enthusiastic, creative, and honest.

Who is your role model, and why?

My cousin, Sarah Greene has always been a role model to me. She’s an amazing actor and has always been so dedicated to pursuing her dreams. Her commitment to her craft is a reminder that hard work and determination will always pay off. We love to watch her succeed and of course love seeing her in action!

Glass half full or half empty?

I’m definitely a “glass half full” kind of person. I’ll always try to see the positive side of things out of any situation!

Where in the world would you most like to visit?

South America, is definitely on the top of my travel bucket list.

And finally, who would win a fight between Spiderman, Batman or Wonder Woman?

Wonder Woman, easily!

Welcome to Barden Susan!

David Healy is an Assistant Accountant with Barden and is part of the Support Team based in Dublin. He has over 20 years’ experience in accounts and payroll and joined Barden in November 2022.

We recently caught up with David to learn a little bit more about him…

Where are you from?

I am from a small town in south Kildare called Castledermot.

Where did you study?

I did my primary degree in St Patrick’s College Drumcondra. I then completed a H Dip in Business with UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School in Blackrock. Later in 2003 I then decided to undertake and complete a degree in HR Management with the National College of Ireland.

What did you enjoy most about your time studying?

In relation to academia, I found my strengths laid in socialising and I would go as far to say I excelled in that facet of third level education! Meeting new people is something I have always really enjoyed and I made friends for life in college. That was the most satisfying outcome I achieved from my time in college.

How old were you when you had your first paying job? And what was it

I was 15 and I worked in a grain yard driving a loader and drying corn. It was a summer job I had for 7 summers and helped finance the college social life.

Where did you work before joining Barden?

Before joining Barden in 2022 I worked for 22 years in Castlethorn Construction.

What made you decide to move into the world of recruitment?

After 22 years in construction I felt I needed a change and was introduced to Barden by a friend. I was initially a candidate, when a role in the finance department that I could be a fit for opened up.

Why did you choose to work with Barden?

I met 6 people from Barden before I joined and all 6 were so friendly, genuine, honest and were so passionate and content working in Barden that it was a very easy choice to make.

What’s the best thing about working here?

The people are number one for me, then the culture, ideology and values of the company.

What was most surprising to you about Barden?

For me it’s how friendly and open everyone was in the organisation and how freely information is shared among colleagues, which previously was an alien concept to me!

What does your role in Barden involve?

It is a finance role & it is very varied. I am involved in payroll, processing sales, purchase invoices and expenses. There are various monthly processes need for monthly management accounts such as various journals that need to be posted and analysis of information. My role calls for me to communicate and work with all departments in the organisation and that is probably the most enjoyable aspect of my role.

What top tip would you give to those looking to change role?

Do your research and make sure the roles you are considering are in line with the perception you have of the role.

What three words best describe you?

Talkative, good humoured and loyal.

Who is your role model, and why?

My parents due to the personal, professional and financial sacrifices they made to make sure myself and my sister had a happy childhood and afforded us the opportunity to third level education, which unfortunately was a privilege not afforded to all my friends.

Is there an achievement or contribution that you are most proud of?

Trying to be the best Dad to my two girls and instil in them that they should always treat others how they would like to be treated themselves. Although running a close second I also won a Kildare county under 12’s division 4 hurling medal…any sports aficionados will understand the significance of such an achievement😂

Have you a favourite saying or quote? What is it?

The great Bill Shankly quote “Some people think football is a matter of life or death but in fact it is more important than that.”

Glass half full or half empty?

Half Full

What’s your favourite song and book?

Song Oasis Wonderwall. It brings me back to my college days the minute I hear it.

My favourite book is Trevor Brennan’s Heart and Soul, it’s not your stereotypical sports autobiography/biography.

Where in the world would you most like to visit?

I would love visit Argentina the home of in my opinion the 2 best footballers ever Maradona and Messi.

And finally, who would win a fight between Spiderman, Batman or Wonder Woman?

Wonder Woman of course.

Karyn Leonard works as a Business Support Specialist with Barden. She joined Barden in January 2023 and is part of the Support Team in Cork.

We recently caught up with Karyn to learn a little bit more about her…

Where are you from?

I am from Dublin and moved down to Cork in November 2021 – quite nice down here in the south I have to say!

Where did you study?

Griffith College where I was awarded a Diploma in Legal Studies and Practice and Rathmines Senior College where I was awarded a Certificate in Secretarial and Office Administration.

What did you enjoy most about your time studying?

I enjoyed studying caselaw for certain subjects – I learned truth is definitely stranger than fiction!

How old were you when you had your first paying job? And what was it?

I was 16 and worked in a pub as lounge/bar staff. When I was even younger, I would do the ironing for my parents every week to get pocket money (needless to say I’m not a fan of ironing after that!).

Where did you work before joining Barden?

I worked pre-dominantly in various law firms before joining Barden.

What made you decide to move into the world of recruitment?

I love helping people and so working in recruitment seemed to me the perfect next step in my career.

Why did you choose to work with Barden?

It was upon meeting the team and learning more about the role and what it involved that led me to choose to work for Barden.  They genuinely have a real interest in making a difference in people’s lives – both for the people who come to them for their services and also the people who work for them.

What’s the best thing about working here?

It has to be the people. I sometimes have sore cheeks from laughing so hard with the team!

What was most surprising to you about Barden?

That they do exactly what they say on the tin!

What does your role in Barden involve?

I provide business administration support to the various teams in Barden.

What top tip would you give to those looking to change role?

Change is always nerve-racking no matter how small or big it is.  If the role feels right, go for it and if you are feeling nervous to make the change, it is never as bad as you think it will be. After a while, you will be asking yourself why didn’t I do this earlier?!

What three words best describe you?

Authentic, Ambitious and Loves-to-Laugh…not sure if that can count as one word?

Who is your role model, and why?

I don’t have any specific role model, but I really admire any person who has, or aspires to change things for the better, be it for themselves or for others.

Is there an achievement or contribution that you are most proud of?

I am proud to be part of the Greater Chernobyl Cause charity where I helped pack an aid container that was brought to the boarder of Slovakia before Christmas.

Have you a favourite saying or quote? What is it?

“Then the day came when the fear of remaining in a tight bud became more painful than the fear of opening up and blossoming.”

Glass half full or half empty?

Half full

What’s your favourite song?

Sooo hard to choose a favourite song! I love all kinds of music from different eras and genres and would have a few favourites across the board.

Where in the world would you most like to visit?

There are many places on my bucket list to visit but I would most like to visit the Maldives or Bali.

And finally, who would win a fight between Spiderman, Batman or Wonder Woman?

Have not got a clue – would have thought they are all on the same team fighting evil. If there was a fallout though, I think Wonder Woman would say something like “c’mon lads, let’s not fight, let’s have a tipple and chat about this!”

Demand for early career accountants has increased by 20% in the last 12 months, according to new data released by specialist accounting talent advisory and recruitment firm Barden. Defined as accountants with 3-5 years post-qualification experience (PQE), the demand for early career accountants is being driven by finance teams restructuring and reshaping themselves for the future.

At present, finance managers, finance business partners and senior financial accountants are amongst the most sought-after talent in organisations big and small. Practical accounting skills remain important but increasingly CFOs are prioritising candidates with people skills; such as the ability to influence others, to lead others, to lead change programmes, and the ability to communicate financial information to non-financial people.

Elaine Brady, Managing Partner, Barden Leinster said

“It has been widely reported in recent months that greater attention needs to be devoted to the development of softer skills, the sorts of skills that early career professionals have not had the opportunity to develop as effectively during COVID. We are seeing this on the ground, and increasingly it is these core skills that differentiate who is promoted/hired and who is not.”

This increased demand contrasts with a similar decline in available talent driven by two key factors. The first of these is a significant uptick in the number of early career professionals relocating oversees/travelling post pandemic, with the duration of their stays extending well beyond the 12-18 month mark. The second of these is a divergence in the opportunities available for accountants at this early career level as firms diversify their service lines and finance project and transformation opportunities increase in frequency.

These findings come as Barden announces a new three year agreement to support the Chartered Accountants Ireland Young Professionals group. The partnership will ensure those a few years into their careers as ACAs have access to the most up to date marketplace intelligence and expertise they need, awareness of future trends and opportunities as they come down the tracks, and what these mean for their career.

Commenting, Sinead Donovan, President of Chartered Accountants Ireland said

“Today’s announcement represents a significant enhancement of the supports available to early career accountants. Supporting the next generation as they enter the profession and build their careers was my priority when I became President. When we see a 20% increase in demand for talent coupled with a decline in available talent, it’s clear that there is something amiss.

“Part of this is better communicating exactly what we do in our profession. It is not just the traditional accounting skills anymore, it is the people skills, the non-financial reporting expertise and so much more. Our annual student recruitment campaign, underway at the moment, very much reflects this focus. We are delighted to partner with Barden to help the next generation access these opportunities.”

Elaine Brady, Managing Partner, Barden Leinster concluded

“Our partnership with Young Professionals cements our commitment to Chartered Accountants Ireland members and signals our confidence in the future of the profession.  Over the coming years we hope that our insights, data and collective experience will help enable early career members to make better, more tactical decisions about their professional future.  That’s what makes this partnership so important.”

Today’s announcement marks the expansion of an already existing partnership between Barden and Chartered Accountants Ireland to support trainees and young members as they move through the early stages of their careers. This partnership commenced in 2018 with Barden’s sponsorship of the Leinster Society annual salary survey and was further expanded in 2020 via sponsorship of the Chartered Accountants Student Society.
