Homeward Bound: Turn Global Experience into Local Value

Homeward Bound: Turn Global Experience into Local Value

Working abroad can be an invaluable experience, especially for accountants, who benefit from exposure to diverse laws, financial regulations, and business practices. However, returning to Ireland and re-entering the local job market can be both exciting and daunting.

To make the most of this transition, it’s essential to think beyond mere job hunting and focus on strategic career planning. This involves finding a role that aligns with your long-term goals and personal growth. If you’re a qualified accountant planning to move back to Ireland, here are some key things to help you make that move back home as streamlined as possible.

Leverage Your International Experience in Your Job Search

Start by reflecting on your experiences abroad and identifying areas where you grew the most, while abroad. Consider roles that challenge these strengths and provide room for growth, even if they push you outside your comfort zone.

One of the greatest advantages you bring as a returning qualified accountant is your international experience. Highlight this on your CV, especially if you’ve gained skills in areas like financial reporting, cross-border taxation, or managing multinational clients. Local businesses, particularly in the multinational space, value accountants who can bring an international perspective to their work.

When applying, consider how your experience aligns with the goals of Irish businesses, especially in sectors such as tech, pharma, and financial services, where international operations are common. Tailoring your CV to showcase this global experience can make a strong case to potential future employers.

Think About Job Titles

Job titles abroad can often be inflated compared to here in Ireland. When thinking about making that move back home, think about how best to align your experience and title to the type and level of role in Ireland.

For example, people with 2/3 years PQE abroad can often have a title such as Finance Manager abroad. But here in Ireland, it can take 6+ years’ PQE to gain that title. It is important to keep an open mind on the title of your next role once you start applying for roles at home. Focus on the responsibilities rather than just the job title. This progression will follow once you get into the right business with the right people.

And remember “Job titles are nothing without context”!
