Gerry Walsh works as a Graduate Associate with Barden’s Financial Services Recruitment Practice, and is based in our office in Cork. His main focus in on providing career advice to insurance professionals and supporting them in taking the very best next step for their professional careers.

We sat down with Gerry to find out a little bit more about him…

Where are you from?

Cork, more importantly Inniscarra!

Where did you study?

I studied Business Management in Munster Technological University (MTU) and went on to do a Masters in Business Economics in UCC.

What did you enjoy most about your time studying?

The friends I made throughout my undergrad and masters. I met some of my closest friends at both stages and wouldn’t change any of it.

How old were you when you had your first paying job? And what was it?

My father is a farmer so I would always be pitching in at home from a young age. Can’t remember what age exactly I would have been paid from but maybe 12/13.

Where did you work before joining Barden?

The most recent role before Barden was for Société Générale as a custody analyst in Dublin.

What made you decide to move into the world of recruitment?

I took a bit of time off after my last role to really decide what path I wanted to go down and I had a few friends that recommended recruitment. I did as much research into the industry as I could and thought it would be a great fit as I love working with new people constantly.

Why did you choose to work with Barden?

When I was doing my research into the world of recruitment I came across Barden and it stood out to me straight away. After I had spoke with Ed, Jonathan, Fionnán and Aideen, the values of the company really stood out, impressed me and aligned very much with mine. After this choosing Barden was a no brainer from my side.

What’s the best thing about working here?

Definitely the people. It’s hard not to succeed in a place like this when I’m surrounded by not just intelligent people but people who are extremely passionate about what they do day in day out.

What does your role in Barden involve?

I work as part of the Financial Services Recruitment Practice here in Barden. I specialise in working with insurance industry professionals across in Ireland and I work with people across all types of roles in Insurance such as Commercial Lines Executives, Commercial Underwriter, Claims handler, Financial Lines Broker, Financial Lines Underwriter and , Life & Pensions Administrator.

What three words best describe you?

Loyal, analytical, ambitious.

Who is your role model, and why?

I would say Tiger Woods. I’m a huge golf fan and I grew up watching him at his best. Watching how far ahead of everyone else he was in terms of talent and work ethic is pretty cool.

Glass half full or half empty?

Half full 100%.

What’s your favourite sport?

I have two favourite sports, basketball and golf. Weirdly enough I have never played basketball but I love watching it. I also spent way too much time on the golf course growing up!

Where in the world would you most like to visit?

I would say most definitely Japan. I think their culture is amazing and I would love to experience it in person.

And finally, who would win a fight between Spiderman, Batman or Wonder Woman?

I’d have to say Wonder Woman…and pretty easily too.
